Dante Alighieri

19th century bronze sculpture bust of Dante Alighieri.
Unique Piece! Great Detail! A beautiful sculpture!
Dante Alighieri (1265-1321) was the great Italian poet and author of The Divine Comedy. A Florentine patrician who was politically active, he fought on the side of the Guelphs, but later supported the imperial party. He became a philosophical and political opponent of Pope Boniface VIII (Pope, 1294-1303). Nevertheless, when the latter was humiliated and virtually deposed by Philip the Fair of France in 1303, Dante was outraged. Dante had been banished from Florence in 1302. The Divine Comedy was written in the vernacular while Dante was in exile. His composition gave rise to Tuscan as the literary language of Italy. Dante died in Ravenna in 1321.
Dante Alighieri was also well known for The Divine Comedy, an epic poem, begun c. 1308 and completed 1320, a year before his death in 1321. It is widely considered the preeminent work of Italian literature and is seen as one of the greatest works of world literature. The poem's imaginative vision of the afterlife is representative of the medieval world-view as it had developed in the Western Church by the 14th century. It helped establish the Tuscan language, in which it is written, as the standardized Italian language. It is divided into three parts: Inferno, Purgatorio, and Paradiso.  On the surface, the poem describes Dante's travels through Hell, Purgatory, and Paradise or Heaven; but at a deeper level, it represents, allegorically, the soul's journey towards God. At this deeper level, Dante draws on medieval Christian theology and philosophy.
A new movie for Dante’s Inferno is currently being filmed by movie director Dustin M Rosemark. This feature-length thriller based on Dante's Inferno will be shot on 8mm & 16mm Black + White Film.
This amazing sculpture of Dante is available in Jacob Pinas Showroom at the New Hope Antiques Center.
